Transforming Entertainment into Education: Insights from Student Success Centre

At the Student Success Centre, we are committed to enhancing student learning through dynamic mentoring challenges. As part of the monthly mentorship challenge, students took part in a unique Movie Review Challenge. This activity combined creative thinking, teamwork, and critical analysis to extract management lessons from popular films.

Here’s a detailed recap of the month’s progress, along with key learnings and outcomes from each stage.

Monthly Mentorship Challenge

Week 1: Introduction to the Movie Review Challenge

The challenge began with an orientation session where mentees were introduced to the concept of using movies as a learning tool for management principles. Each mentorship group brainstormed and shortlisted 2-3 movies with themes that align with management lessons, teamwork, and social relevance. After validation by their mentors, one movie was finalized for each group.

Key Points Considered for Selection:

• Theme: Relevance to management concepts.

• Teamwork: Depiction of collaboration and problem-solving.

• Social Relevance: The impact and societal connections of the movie.

• Management Lessons: Specific takeaways applicable to real-world scenarios.

• Impact: The movie’s influence and significance.

Learning: Students learned how to critically analyze movies, focusing on identifying management lessons and their real-world applications.

Outcome: Each group finalized a unique movie for their review, ensuring no duplication, and justified their choices effectively to mentors.

Week 2: Preparation for Presentations

The second week focused on preparation, with teams refining their analysis and structuring their presentations. They received guidance from mentors, reviewed their selected movies, and prepared 15-minute presentations, incorporating clippings and comments.

Learning: Students gained experience in collaborative preparation, refining their analysis skills, and incorporating constructive feedback to enhance their presentations.

Outcome: Each group completed their preparation with a structured review, ready for the final presentation.

Week 3: Movie Review Presentations and Recognition

The final week witnessed an exciting presentation session where groups showcased their analysis before an internal judge. Each team presented for 15 minutes, highlighting management lessons, teamwork dynamics, and societal impacts drawn from their chosen movies.

Learning: Students learned the art of presenting their analysis with clarity and creativity, developing skills in public speaking, critical thinking, and teamwork.

Outcome: The activity concluded with enthusiastic participation and outstanding presentations that showcased diverse perspectives and innovative insights.
