Competence is the set of demonstrable characteristics and skills that enable, and improve the efficiency or performance of a job. To have a successful career we need competencies. We had our guest speaker Mr.Ranganath I V S, Head-HR ShriramBioseed Genetics (A Division of DCM Shriram Ltd), on 30th Jan 2021 explain about the various competencies. The first step we should follow is to move out of our comfort zone. He explained the different stages of life and how one changes and develops with age. He then gave an example of a pizza base which does not taste the same without the toppings. Similarly, mere qualifications and knowledge are just like a pizza base, so it is necessary to learn skills like leadership, agility, communication, empathy, creativity, problem-solving, collaboration, learnability, technology etc., which act as the toppings. He emphasized on reskilling and upskilling which has become more critical these days with changing scenarios. The combination of knowledge and skills with the right attitude leads to a successful career. Further he explained a few important skills one must develop. He talked about integration of 3 P’s Passion, Purpose and Personal brand to have a successful career. The changing environment has impacted the workforce so it has become necessary for everyone to unlearn and relearn to adjust into the new normal through reshaping their job roles accordingly. The session ended with the questionnaire with some interesting questions by the students.
