ISBR Cares: Every Drop Counts – A Water Conservation Drive

The volunteers of ISBR’s Sustainability Club embarked on a mission to champion water conservation, responding to the urgent need to safeguard our most precious resource. Unlike the global UN theme of “Glacier Preservation,” the focus in Bangalore is much closer to home—addressing the severe drinking water crisis that worsens every summer.

With lakes encroached upon and groundwater overexploited, Bangaloreans are now facing the dire consequences of unsustainable water management. The authorities have reacted with last-minute interventions, such as banning the drilling of new borewells and mandating open spaces for rainwater harvesting. However, true change lies not in reactive policies but in proactive, community-driven efforts to conserve water.

A Nation’s Vision for Water Security

Water scarcity is not just Bangalore’s problem; it is a global crisis. India, under the leadership of the Prime Minister, has set forth an ambitious vision—Amrit Kaal Viksit Bharat 2047—for a water-secure future. The strategy is simple yet powerful: Reduce. Reuse. Recharge. Recycle.

As the Union Minister of Jal Shakti aptly puts it, “Every drop matters. It’s about making rainwater work for us, turning wastewater into an asset, and cultivating habits so that conservation becomes second nature.”

Key national initiatives include:

  • Jal Jeevan Mission (2019) – Ensuring safe drinking water for rural households.
  • Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain (2021) – Encouraging water harvesting.
  • Nari Shakti Se Jal Shakti (2024) – Recognizing the critical role of women in water conservation, from reviving traditional water bodies to creating watershed projects.
  • Swachh Bharat Mission – Driving waste management under the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation.
  • National Hydrogen Project, Atal Bhujal Yojana, and National Aquifer Mapping Programme – Undertaking the world’s largest groundwater mapping initiative, covering 25 lakh sq. km.

ISBR’s Commitment to Water Conservation

ISBR is proud to contribute to this national movement through meaningful student-led initiatives. As part of the Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Development, guided by Prof. Shiva Prakash, students took on the responsibility of raising awareness and taking action. Key activities included:

  1. Film Screenings – Showcasing impactful documentaries and campaigns on water conservation from the World Economic Forum, HUL, Sintex, and Mission Pani.
  2. Water Audit at ISBR – Assessing water usage and wastage within the campus to identify areas for improvement and implement conservation strategies.

These efforts go beyond symbolic gestures—they represent a shift in mindset, inspiring students and faculty to adopt sustainable water practices in their daily lives.

The Road Ahead

At ISBR, we believe that sustainability is not just an academic concept—it is a responsibility. Our students and faculty are leading by example, ensuring that water conservation is not just a campaign but a way of life. As we move forward, we invite the ISBR community and beyond to join us in this mission.

Because every drop saved today is a future secured for tomorrow.
